Currently, many engineering leaders are unaware of this discrepancy. They see only a single line item in the AI budget without understanding which tokens contributed to successful production code and which resulted in waste. This situation is not a conspiracy but rather a structural incentive problem that the VP of Engineering must address since providers are unlikely to rectify it themselves.

Historical Context: Learning from Cloud Computing

This includes commit-level attribution that indicates which AI agent authored the code, the proportion of AI-generated versus human-edited contributions, and whether the code passed review, was rewritten, or ultimately deployed.

By linking AI spending directly to production outcomes, organizations can discern which teams are effectively leveraging AI agents and which ones are wasting resources. They can identify vendors that produce code ready for deployment versus those that create additional work for reviewers. Understanding whether rising AI costs stem from effective adoption or inefficient processes is crucial.
