Apple celebrates Accessibility Awareness Day with Fitness+, live sessions, shortcut suggestions, more

Apple is celebrating Accessibility Awareness Day throughout this week by introducing exciting new content for users with diverse abilities. The company has rolled out a variety of features across its platforms, including Fitness+, Apple Maps, and Apple Music, ensuring accessibility is a priority for all users.

Enhancing Accessibility in Apple Stores

Starting May 19, SignTime, an on-demand sign language service, will be available in Canada. This service allows Apple Support and Store customers to communicate with an interpreter through American Sign Language (ASL). SignTime is already operational in the US, UK, and France, providing ASL, British Sign Language (BSL), and French Sign Language (LSF) respectively.

This week, Apple Stores worldwide are hosting live sessions aimed at educating customers on utilizing various accessibility features available on their iPhones. These sessions will also be available through Apple Support’s social media channels, broadening their reach.

New Shortcuts for Mac and Apple Watch

In addition, Apple is introducing an Accessibility Assistant shortcut within the Shortcuts app on Mac and Apple Watch. This handy tool provides recommendations for accessibility features tailored to individual user preferences, making it easier for users to find the support they need.

Inclusive Workouts for Wheelchair Users

Apple Fitness+ is taking significant steps to accommodate wheelchair users by featuring trainer Bakari Williams, who will use ASL to highlight accessibility features. Notable enhancements include Audio Hints, which deliver descriptive verbal cues for users with visual impairments. Fitness+ will also transform its “Time to Walk” and “Time to Run” episodes into inclusive formats, now titled “Time to Walk or Push” and “Time to Run or Push” respectively. Every workout and meditation session will incorporate ASL, and all videos will feature closed captioning in six languages. Trainers will demonstrate modifications for varying fitness levels, ensuring that everyone can participate.

Exploring Parks with Apple Maps

Apple Maps is introducing a new guide titled 'Parks Access for All,' which helps users discover accessible features, programs, and services in parks across the US. This initiative is in collaboration with Gallaudet University, a leading institution for Deaf, Deafblind, and hard of hearing students. Furthermore, Apple Maps will spotlight businesses that support the Deaf community, aligning with Tim Cook’s recent remarks during his commencement address at Gallaudet.

Sound-Focused Playlists on Apple Music

Apple Music has launched “Saylist” playlists, each focusing on unique sounds. Designed to assist those practicing vocal sounds or engaging in speech therapy, these playlists are accessible for everyone wanting to enjoy diverse audio experiences.

More Initiatives for Accessibility Awareness Day

Apple TV+ is showcasing popular films and shows that represent individuals with disabilities. It will feature collections highlighting well-known actors from the accessibility community, such as Marlee Matlin from CODA and Lauren Ridloff from Eternals. The App Store is also emphasizing accessibility-focused applications and sharing stories from developers. Additionally, Apple Books is presenting a new collection that includes narratives from people with disabilities, while Apple Podcasts will spotlight advancements in accessibility through technology.
