New York: It is well-known that the United States has announced the suspension of US Aid, which provides financial assistance for the development of countries around the world. Now, the effect of this suspension has been felt in India as well. Reports suggest that three clinics established for transgender individuals in India have been shut down. As a result, nearly 5,000 people are no longer receiving medical services. The first-ever transgender clinic in Hyderabad, along with clinics in Kalyan and Pune in Maharashtra, have also reportedly been closed.
In 2021, the Mitra Hospital was inaugurated in Hyderabad as the first clinic for transgender individuals. Several reports have indicated that the clinic provided services such as hormone therapy awareness, mental health counseling, and guidance on HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases. In addition, general medical care, legal assistance, and other services were also offered. It is stated that the cost of providing these services for each individual amounted to ₹30 Lakhs annually.
Following reports that three transgender clinics in India have been closed, global billionaire Elon Musk and Republican Party Senator John Kennedy responded on social media. They questioned if the American public now understands where their tax dollars are going, stating that it’s becoming clear which countries benefit from US aid. The Trump administration is taking actions to halt all projects funded by US taxpayer money. Additionally, it was recently reported that Trump had ordered the suspension of foreign aid.
